The Pharmacy Call Center Pharmacy Technician provides direct and comprehensive telephone support for Veteran patients with regard to prescription related logistical and availability issues and concerns in support of multiple medical facilities.

DUTIES:

Duties: The incumbent duties consists of all telephone inquiries from patients/family members regarding any issue related to prescription availability, including but not, limited to refills and mailed prescription status. Communication and clarification regarding prescription window and mail processing, patient co-payment responsibilities, and patient co-management procedures. Participate in performance improvement activities and monitoring documentation as assigned, readily identify potential opportunities to enhance patient care and/or operational functionality, and share recommendations with assigned supervisor. The incumbent participate in pharmacy-based lectures and educational programs as assigned, follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files. Advise the patient on problem resolution and screen/triage calls for problems, administratively evaluates patient for appointments and provides information as appropriate.

PTCB Certification preferred.

Tour of Duty: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Monday - Friday Weekends optional

12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday Weekends optional

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

a. U.S. citizenship.

b. Education or Experience: Successful completion of 2 years above high school with courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology, or 1 year of general experience that may have included experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc.) Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program conducted by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

c. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

d. Physical Requirement

e. English language proficiency.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

GS-5

a) Education or Experience. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.

2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.

3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.

4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.

Salary will be determined by the Pharmacy Technician Professional Standard Board.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
