We’re looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about healthcare policy, advocacy and impacting lives with a dynamic background in public policy, event management and communications.
  

 

Working as a highly collaborative member of the Public Policy team, the Manager, Public Policy performs a wide range of activities in the areas of: policy, advocacy, event management and communications including PR, social media; and external relations. The position is ideal for a person who approaches their work with a sense of humor, a deep curiosity, and an entrepreneurial spirit, who likes to try new things, and can function well under tight, and ever-changing deadlines.
  

 

The Public Policy team is based in Columbus, Ohio at the Alzheimer’s Associations Central Ohio Chapter office. This dynamic team is expected to be proactive, responsive and creative without ever losing sight of the details.
  

 

This position reports to the Director of State Public Policy.
  

 

Key Responsibilities:  

 

Policy, Government Affairs, and Advocacy    

 
     
  • Track and interpret policies and key issues, monitor trends and opportunities  
  •  
  • Participate in the policy-making process through campaigns and coalitions, letter-writing, public comment and advocate communications  
  •  
  • Participate in and coordinate advocacy activities including building a culture of advocacy through digital media and event planning  
  •  
  • Communication and campaign strategy     
  •  
 

Media Relations    

 
     
  • Coordinate media relations activities including: identification of news opportunities and feature story ideas, writing news releases/media advisories, pitching to targeted media, responding to media calls, preparing talking points for Association representatives and developing statements in response to media inquiries, and supporting subject matter experts when engaging externally  
  •  
  • Proactively develop relationships with journalists, influencers and media outlets  
  •  
  • Monitor media coverage and develop regular and ad-hoc reports and recommend strategies according to findings  
  •  
  • Expand and educate the Alzheimer’s Association Public Policy network of earned media and journalist contacts   
  •  
  • Support crisis communications activities  
  •  
  • Collaborate and partner with six-chapter communication staff statewide    
  •  
 

Content Development    

 
     
  • Maintain and implement an annual content and activity calendar  
  •  
  • Maintain a current program list   
  •  
  • Independently and in collaboration with partners draft talking points, messaging documents, blog posts, policy papers, website content, digital content and agency updates for internal and external audiences and other written resources    
  •  
 

Affinity building and engagement    

 
     
  • Respond to digital media and other inquires  
  •  
  • Manage social media including monitoring accounts and proactively increasing engagement  
  •  
  • Attend external meetings and events as a representative of the organization    
  •  
 

And, other duties as assigned.
  

 

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

 

Education and Experience Required    

 
     
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public policy, business, public relations or related field.  
  •  
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience    
  •  
 

Knowledge Required    

 
     
  • Deep understanding of best practices in media communication and social media  
  •  
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and internet applications, Knowledge of Adobe Suite a plus   
  •  
  • Deep knowledge of public policy and campaigns    
  •  
 

Desired    

 
     
  • Understanding of the local, state and federal policy-making process, particularly for Healthcare policy.    
  •
