Job Description

The Patient Care Technician/Health Unit Coordinator (PCT/HUC) role combines the essential roles of the PCT and HUC into one role that will function based upon operational needs.

The PCT is a multi-skilled individual able to perform technical and clinical tasks/procedures under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and delegated in accordance with the Ohio Board of Nursing. Identities abnormal findings based on established standards and guidelines and reports those findings to the Registered Nurse.

The HUC is pivotal in the overall function of the unit including coordinating communication, data entry and stocking/ordering of supplies. Provides clerical assistance to physicians and staff. Provides direction and guidance to patients, families and visitors while promoting a positive patient experience. Tasks are performed under the oversight of the RN in coordination with other team members.
Essential Duties & Functions:
1. Performs and documents patient care skills completely and efficiently as delegated by the nurse upon verification of PCT competence.
2. Makes appropriate notifications regarding abnormal findings.
3. Promptly answers calls, responds to the needs of patients, visitors and/or family members and relays information/requests to appropriate person(s).
4. Appropriately secures forms and handles supplies/medications/lab specimens transported into/within unit.
5. Assists with the location and management of patient property.
6. Initiates maintenance requests orders, assures that maintenance requests for repair of defective equipment are completed promptly.
7. Prepares and maintains charts and associated documents. Assures that patient charts are accurate and updated.
8. Tracks and makes appropriate notifications regarding admissions, transfers, consultations, discharges and deaths.
9. Consistently monitors the electronic medical record for any multi-step functionality orders that need to be completed with CPOM (computer physician order management) and carries out in a timely fashion.


Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Certification: Current Health Care Provider or Professional Rescuer BLS CPR certification required at time of hire (no on-line certifications accepted).

Experience: Successful completion of one of the following:

- Nurse Aide training course (CNA) within the last 5 years

- Valid STNA

- Patient Care Technician/Assistant certification

- 6 months Direct Patient Care experience within the last 12 months

- Experience in an Acute Care Setting within the last 6 months

- Currently enrolled in nursing school and completion of at least one clinical rotation

Must be able to multitask with constant interruptions while maintaining a pleasant demeanor

Strong organization skills
Effective interpersonal and communication skills
